What is Faith? Faith is a Decision!

In today’s world, the word “faith” is a common part of speech. You may hear someone say, “You just gotta have a little faith” or you may hear someone referred to as a man or woman ‘of faith’ or even a whole group referred to as a ‘People of faith’, but what does it mean, what are we saying? Often, there is an assumption that when we are talking about faith, we are talking about ‘Believers’, that is ‘Born again Christians’ but the simple truth is that everyone has Faith. Everyone believes in something. Perhaps you are sitting down while you are reading this. If so, you exercised faith in that pew or chair or stool when you sat down on it. Even if you were fearful and looked at it carefully before sitting down, you still demonstrated faith in your own judgment when you sat down.

Today, all over the “Christian World” we celebrate Palm Sunday. The day of the “Triumphal Entry”, the day that Jesus rode the Donkey into Jerusalem as the people sang Hosanna and placed their coats and palm branches upon the road ahead of Him. Zechariah 9:9 says, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.” Now, do you think for a minute that the people outside of the city that were in the parade with Jesus were the only ones who were familiar with that verse? No, the Religious leaders that were inside the city were very much aware of it. Not only this, but The Gospel of Matthew tells us that “...the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them. And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the son of David; they were sore displeased.” (21:14-15) You see, they had the same information, they saw the same events, they were given the same proof, they simply chose to reject it. They chose to believe something else, and by ‘faith’ they committed themselves. Their ‘Faith’ caused them to seek to destroy Jesus in any way possible.

An Evolutionist has ‘Faith’ he believes that either ‘Matter and Time’ are eternal, or that ‘out of nothing came everything’. The Atheist believes that since you can’t see God, He must not exist. Faith is a decision, it is a choice. We get to choose who and what we put our faith in. For me it is simple, I choose to believe what the Bible says. I choose to believe John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” - Pastor Tim
