For Such A Time As This

Posted on March 24, 2019 at 9:15 AM

This past Wednesday evening at sunset began the celebration of Purim and it lasted until sunset on Thursday evening. Unless you are Jewish, the holiday probably came and went without you even noticing. So, for you Gentile Christians, what is Purim, and why should we even care? Well, we should care because it comes right out of the Bible, The book of Esther. In fact the beginning of the Holiday is found in chapter 9. The celebration of Purim is about God’s faithfulness to His people. It is about God saving His People from certain annihilation. It is a celebration of the defeat of evil and about the courage of one young woman who was willing to put her own life on the line to save her people. Yes, the Book of Ester tells this story: the story of being at the right place at the right time, and doing the right thing.

In today’s world this is a message that we also need to hear. We too find ourselves increasingly surrounded with those who would desire to shut us up, those who would tell us “It’s ok if you want to practice your religion, but do it in your own churches or in your own homes, and keep it to yourselves.” It is sad to say, but the animosity towards traditional Christianity seems to grow every day. The Bible tells us of a time when people would call evil good, and good evil, and we live in those times. Perhaps, we too need to be reminded as Esther’s Uncle reminded her:

“For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14 NKJV)

As part of the traditional celebration of Purim, Jewish families around the world sat down together this past week and read the Book of Esther. My challenge to you is that in this coming week we all do the same thing. Let us all be challenged, blessed and encouraged by this precious little book that God has given to us.
