New Journey Fellowship

First, I will acknowledge that at this point the greeting seems to be a little bit belated, but none-the-less, this is the first Sunday of 2019. You probably noticed that the word “Happy” was in italics and that I ended my title with a question mark. Well, at this point in 2019 there is truly a big question as to whether or not 2019 will, in fact, be a happy year. After all, we are in the middle of a partial government shut down and we have started off the new year with a very divided federal government. The sad reality is that there is a very real question as to whether the government will be able to accomplish anything in this coming year. (Of course, time will tell, and would we really notice if they didn’t?)
But the division does not end there, no, it goes far deeper, and impacts every aspect of our society. Now I realize that we have never lived in a utopia and there have always been needs and plenty of room for improvement, but in the past I thought that we had finally gotten to the point that there was at least a willingness to put our differences aside and at least try to get along. To one degree or another we had learned that we did not always have to get our way and that it was at least desirable to try to find common ground. No. This has never been perfect, but at least there was always a hope that we would somehow work out our differences. But there are changes that are going on in our society that are impacting us as a people that just a few years ago would have been unimaginable. Further, I would go so far as to say that I believe there are those who have become so committed to their view of what America should be, that they are completely willing to destroy the one that we have so that they can start over. Their purpose is to cause division. Their goal is to turn us all against one another. If they can accomplish this, then we will destroy ourselves, leaving them to build a new society of their own choosing.
Is there hope? Yes! As a believer, we do not have to allow them to have power over us. We do not have to become a part of all that is going on. We already have what the world is looking for and we do not have to let them take it away from us: we have peace. Yes, we have peace with God, but not only that, we can also have the peace of God. The peace that can only come from God. The peace that we know that He is in control,. The peace that no matter what happens allows us to know that He is with us. We also have another weapon in our arsenal, that is love. Yes, we can love because we know that He loves us and if we are willing He will help us to love not only those who love us, but also those who would be our enemies. In doing so, no matter what happens, we win!
