Their Great Impact

Posted on May 27, 2018 at 10:40 AM

Every year our nation pauses for a moment to remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice so that we can have this freedom that we so often take for granted. Yes, those who have given so much came from all walks of life, it didn’t matter if they were rich or poor, it didn’t matter if they were black or white, it didn’t matter if their family had just come to live in this great nation, or if they had been here for generations. They served because they were called upon by their nation, they served because of honor, they served because of courage, they served because of character. But not only did those who died as they served in the military pay this tremendous price for our freedom, but the price was also paid by those who lost their son or daughter, those who lost their mother or father, those who lost their husband or wife.

Yes, their absence can be felt in every aspect of our society, whether in the jobs that they never held or in the events that they did not attend. For most of us, this absence is never realized, but for those who knew and loved them the absence and the hurt is vast. They live in a world of “if only” or “what if”. You see, if they had not served, if they had not answered the call, they would have been able to impact the lives of those whom they loved in many different ways, but in their service they not only protected the ones whom they loved, but they also protected all of us. Their impact is seen every time they play the national anthem before a sporting event, every time a child says the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of a school day. Their impact is seen in our freedom of the press, in our freedom to worship. Yes, even this morning as we meet to worship, their impact is felt. In every aspect of the freedom that we all take so for granted, their impact is felt.

Today, as we celebrate Memorial Day, let us pause for a moment and simply  remember. Let us pause and just be thankful, not only for those who gave their lives, but for all those who served and are serving to protect this great nation of ours. May God bless the families of our fallen heroes. May God bless all who have served and are serving. And may God bless our nation.
